ICVET Update: September 2007

Maret StaronFrom Maret Staron, Manager, TAFE NSW ICVET

I’m so pleased to be able to say that this year’s Learning Powerhouse Conference was a great success with over 550 attending.  Thanks to those who put so much effort, particularly Cliff Trood and Susie Moore, into organising the conference, and many thanks to the presenters and showcase organisers who shared their knowledge so willingly.  I must also thank the sponsors who give so generously.  I am excited by the amount and quality of resources the Conference has generated, all of which make the conference site a rich and engaging place to visit.

As we move into a future where more and more resources go beyond the written, our site contains video streaming of events in the main theatre, podcasts of most sessions and a host of stories, papers and other resources.  So much has come from the event, that once again we have needed to dedicate a special issue eZine just to the conference.
Our TAFE NSW RPL Colloquium, has provided a frenzy of work for Janet Hewson, Greg Madden and Cliff.  They’ve hosted some “making it happen” RPL forums online with more in train.  We are supporting a number of post Colloquium initiatives that Institutes are undertaking.  These build on the findings of the Colloquium.

The new TAFE NSW Professional Development Framework for 2007 – 2009 has been released. It features a strategic overview of the VET context that is well worth a look.  Extensive feedback from Institutes was instrumental in informing this new Framework.

Jeff Saul is coordinating some very exciting upcoming Australian Flexible Learning Framework events.  The Innovate and Integrate workshop on October 18 will bring together identified innovators within the VET sector, to assist in embedding innovative practice into business and organisations.  It features the findings of the research by Marie Jasinski Innovate and Integrate: Embedding Innovation in VET. On the same day, VET practitioners can participate in a highlight of the Framework calendar - a keynote session with Alan Levine, the Director, Member and Technology Resources for the New Media Consortium, USA.  Alan is an internationally respected leader in e-learning, and his session is sure to be interactive and inspirational.

This year on November 1 and 2, lots of energy is going into the annual eLearning showcase: eLearning07, providing an opportunity for NSW LearnScope teams and Framework projects to present and share their learning through an impressive range of conversations, demonstrations, workshops and panel presentations.  I’m really confident that this year’s showcase will be even more inspiring and innovative than ever.

The Victorian TAFE Development Centre has invited me to present on the life based learning research at one of their state conferences in October and I look forward to it.  As some of you may know, the research is dear to my heart and I enjoy every opportunity I have at promoting it and helping people get started.  Life based learning provides a relevant model for our context and TAFE NSW Sydney Institute has customised the model to meet their workforce capability development needs.  I recommend that you read Jai Waters and Julie Collareda’s paper in this issue of the eZine, or watch their presentation on the video streaming.

I’ve released an evaluation report on ICVET 2004 – 2006.  It provides detailed data on the use of our products and services and the feedback from Institutes about our priorities for the few years.  Also included as Appendix 4 is our new business plan 2007 – 2009.

The year is racing along, and the workloads just seem to increase.  I know many of you are experiencing this too.  We will have one more issue of the eZine to you before Christmas.  Now that this issue is out, its on to some hard work for the next!!
