Introduction to Del.icio.us

press the register button at the top-right of the screenINTRODUCTION | Luke Hodges, TAFE NSW ICVET

We would like YOU to contribute to building our community’s knowledge.  You can do this by tagging any sites you find useful, that relate to our main areas.  To do this you can use a tool called Delicious.

linksBrand new to the ICVET website is the Your Links area. You can find this area in the 'Our Work' priority areas such as the Workplace Learning and Recognition of Prior Learning pages. These areas are where your contribution will show up.

What is del.icio.us?

Delicious is a social bookmarking site, it provides it's users a place to store and share bookmarks online. You can also use the delicious website to search through other users bookmarks like a search engine to find web pages of interest.

STEP 1: Go to

GO TO http://del.icio.us

STEP 2: Register

How do I start using del.icio.us? First of all you need to sign up for a Delicious account using the register button in the top-right corner. Simply enter the details delicious prompts you to enter, check your email (without closing the current browser window you are using), then follow the link that delicious has sent you. Your account is active and ready to go!

right-click the bookmarklett buttons and selcet save linkSTEP 3: Install buttons

Before you close the screen that ends your registration, you will notice toward the bottom of the page, a link that takes you to bookmarklet buttons. You will need to follow this link to install the buttons you will use to save your favourites.

To install these buttons simply right click the ‘my delicious’ and ‘post to delicious buttons’ and select ‘Add to favourites’. These are the buttons you will use when you want to either access your delicious account or to add a site to your collection.
(note: if you use the links toolbar you can grab these shortcuts onto the toolbar for easier access).

STEP 4: Bookmark a site

As you come across a page you would like to add to your collection, simply press the ‘post to delicious’ favourites link.

You are now presented with a number of fields that you need to complete. The URL and the description will have already been done for you, feel free to change the description, but not the URL. To make this task simpler, think of the description as the title and the notes field as the description as this is how it will be displayed.

fill out the required fields and press save to bookmark a pageSTEP 5: Tag your page

Tags are like topical keywords that youwill index your pages under. You will also be able to search for your pages by using these keywords. You may add as many as you like, use the same keyword for different pages as many times as you like and use any combination of tags that you like.

STEP 6: Include ICVET in your tagging

To contribute your site relevant to one of the Our Work topic areas then simply tag your site with the tag for that area (e.g. icvetrecognition1). You can find the tags to use for each topic on that particular topics page under the 'Your Links' section.

STEP 7: Save

When you are finished, press ‘save’.

Now, if you go to ‘my delicious’ you will notice that the page you have just tagged is saved in your bookmarks, and your tag(s) that you entered now appear to the side.

Happy bookmarking.
