Lift-off for CLAS
RESOURCE | Grant Casey, Centre for Learning Innovation
The Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI) has developed a tool to help you reflect on and develop your use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in your teaching practice. The tool, known as the Connected Learning Advisory Service (CLAS), is now available to all staff via the DET Portal (using the “My applications” tab).
CLAS is a web-based resource that:
- helps teachers assess their own use of ICT for teaching and learning by responding to a series of statements
- enables teachers to create a log of evidence of their capacity to use ICT as a teaching tool and
- provides links to examples of good practice, professional learning activities, online resources and research (which can become part of your “learning plan”).
CLAS includes a number of videos of teachers describing how they are using ICT in their practice.
Accessing CLAS for TAFE
To access CLAS:
- log in to the DET Portal
- click on the “My applications” tab near the top of the page
- click on the link to CLAS (TAFE).
Using the CLAS website
Use the links on the left-hand navigation for information on:
- benefits of using the CLAS tool
- an explanation of the terminology used throughout the website
- suggestions on how to use the CLAS tool.
Use the right-hand navigation for links to:
The MyMap tool
MyMap is an online tool that helps you assess the integration of ICT into your teaching and learning practice. It also helps you to prepare a personalised learning plan.
The ICT Framework
The ICT Framework describes the knowledge and skills you use to integrate ICT into your teaching practice. The link to the framework is on the right-hand side of the website. It downloads as a single-page pdf file.
Feedback
The website has a link to an online survey where you can give us feedback on the CLAS tool. Your feedback is essential to make sure the CLAS tool remains current and useful.
Learning Plan
Another feature of the CLAS tool is the “Learning Plan” which gives you links to resources, examples of uses of ICT in teaching and professional development activities related to your use of ICT.
Reports
The data collected by the MyMap tool is protected by your DET portal username and password. Only you can see your personal information. Using the MyMap tool, you can print out a range of reports mapping your current practices against the ICT Framework.
The MyMap tool can also produce an aggregated report of responses for your teaching section or faculty (or other grouping). Again, no individual is identified but the aggregate data may be used to decide which professional development activities would best target the needs of the group.
