Anne De SalisAnne De Salis, TAFE Commission Board

Anne De Salis is a member of the TAFE NSW Board and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has held positions of Group Executive, Corporate Culture and Communications, Medical Benefits Fund of Australia (MBF), Director of AMP Direct, AMP@Work and Senior Adviser to the then Prime Minister, the Hon P J Keating. Anne worked for many years as an economic adviser to the Commonwealth Government.

In 1991 Anne became the first woman appointed to the senior executive level in the Treasury since Federation. Board appointments have included AMP Superannuation Limited, AMP Consulting Pty Ltd, AAS Pty Ltd and NSW Financial Institutions Commission.

Anne's areas of expertise are E-Commerce, Education, Financial Services, Government, Health, Insurance, Investment Services, Non-Exec. Director, Public Administration.

Kim FillinghamKim Fillingham, General Manager, TAFE Business

Closing Remarks

Kim Fillingham is a 2006 Fellowship Recipient from the Australian College of Educators. Kim has been recognised for outstanding and distinctive contributions in leading the implementation of strategies, policies and programs to ensure high quality education and training programs in secondary education, vocational education in schools, and technology in NSW classrooms. He has held many positions in the school and TAFE sectors, including head teacher, leading teacher, Cluster Director, Assistant Director-General (Riverina Region) and the Director of TAFE NSW Southern Institute. Kim has recently accepted the appointment of General Manager, TAFE Business.

During his period as Assistant Director-General, Kim had responsibility for major government priorities such as the Computers in Schools program, Technology Strategy development and the Technology Education Committee as well as liaison at the most senior levels with the Aboriginal communities and the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) Inc.


Susan HartiganSusan Hartigan, Institute Director, TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute

Susan began her career as an English teacher in the school education sector and has been a teacher and senior manager in TAFE NSW for many years. This has provided her with a wide range of experiences and challenges in areas as diverse as national project management, business development, organisational change, corporate services, college, and institute strategic management.

Susan is an enthusiastic and motivated manager with highly developed leadership skills. She has demonstrated these skills in various senior executive positions including as Associate/Deputy Director and Director Ultimo College at the TAFE NSW Sydney Institute, the largest vocational education and training institution in Australia.

Susan was recently appointed to the position Institute Director, TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute located in a region which is experiencing rapid economic and population growth. In 2005, the Institute delivered programs to more than 85,000 students in 1,000 vocational areas across seven Colleges and through TAFE NSW’s distance education provider, the Open Training and Education Network (OTEN).

Susan believes in balancing work and family life while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.


Megan LillyMegan Lilly, Associate Director, Education and Training, Australian Industry Group

Key address

Megan Lilly is the Associate Director - Education & Training for the Australian Industry Group. Megan has responsibility for the public policy development relating to education and training for Ai Group. Prior to this Megan was the CEO of Business Services Training Australia, the national industry advisory board for the business services and related industry sectors.

Before joining the national ITAB Megan held several senior management positions in various Victorian TAFE institutes and was the Manager of the Australian Competency Research Centre.

Megan is currently a Director of Manufacturing Skills Australia; member of the National Quality Council; member of the National Quality Council; member of the National Skills Shortage Committee, and a member of the Victorian Learning & Employment Skills Commission.

Allen Madden, Educational and Cultural Officer, Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council

Welcome to Country

Allen Madden is the Educational and Cultural Officer of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, the body that acts as custodian for the traditional land owners. Allen is an Aboriginal man from Gadigal Land who has resided in the Redfern area all of his life and is a well respected member of the Redfern community.


Dianne MurrayDianne Murray, Institute Director, TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute

Opening of Conference and Master of Ceremonies

Dianne has recently taken up the position of Director, Illawarra Institute after an extensive career in education and also has vast experience in strategic planning, policy setting, systems development and resource management. She has held a number of senior executive appointments in the NSW TAFE Commission, and was previously Associate Director at South Western Sydney Institute where she implemented significant reforms in the delivery of services to the south western Sydney region. Dianne has extensive experience providing leadership to support improvements in organisational performance and provision of support services for education and training services and initiatives.

Her academic background is MEd; Graduate Diploma in Education, B. Arts. Her areas of responsibility are Corporate Services including HR, Finance, Assets and ICT; and Institute Support Services including Business Development, International Business, Staff Training and Development, Educational Planning and Evaluation.

Her academic areas of interest are Sociology, Psychology and Education. Dianne was involved in the development of international programs in the Peoples Republic of China, Vietnam and her personal interests are in film, literature, politics, music and travel.


Marie PerssonMarie Persson, Deputy Director-General, TAFE & Community Education

Key address

Marie Persson was appointed Deputy Director-General, TAFE and Community Education at the end of 2005 and is the first woman in 115 years to fill this position. Her appointment followed her successful revamping of TAFE NSW Sydney Institute, her management reforms as the Department's Deputy Director-General of Organisational Development, and her extensive experience at the national level.

Marie has 20 years experience in vocational education and training and, as Director of Training Reform, was one of the original senior executives with the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

She has a Master of Education qualification from the University of NSW, is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a member of Women Chiefs of Enterprises International.

In 2003 Marie won the NSW Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award and the Australian Government and Community Business Woman Award.

James ValentineJames Valentine

Panel Host

James Valentine has an eclectic string of achievements to his name. He is a broadcaster with 702ABC Sydney and is also the Australian reporter for Showtime Movie News, a daily program on contemporary cinema seen nationally on Showtime. In addition to broadcasting, James is the author of the 'JumpMan' series, three novels for young readers. He has written for Rolling Stone, Vogue and Cleo.

James' media career began with ABC Television where he presented 'The Afternoon Show'. He then worked for 'Good Morning Australia', before becoming host and writer of 'TVTV'. After leaving school James studied music at Melbourne State College and began working with jazz and rock bands. He played saxophone and woodwinds with Jo Camilleri, Kate Ceberano, and Steven Cummings before joining 'The Models'. With them he recorded two No 1 hits, several platinum albums and toured the US and Europe. He went on to play with 'Absent Friends'. James is also seen as a judge on the Channel 7 music show, 'It Takes Two'.
