Workplace Learning and Assessing Behind the Razor Wire: Education and Training within Corrective Services

Presentation | Room 9C

Cheryl GauntlettCheryl Gauntlett
Teacher Hospitality Management
TAFE NSW Western Sydney Institute, Nepean

For the past five years Cheryl has been delivering Hospitality programs to men and women in custody at thee independent jails in Sydney. Many inmates who enrolled in the initial program have furthered their study in hospitality training while still in prison and when their classifications changed, attended college classes once a week while still in jail. Upon their release, some have successfully gained employment in the hospitality sector and are taking their place as highly functional community members.

Why do Cheryl’s programs gain popularity with inmates? Why is attendance always high, with motivation and interest reaching unexpected and unprecedented levels? And why are changes in attitude, self respect, self esteem and self confidence so apparent in every inmate in every class very early into the program?

Personal change and motivating students is always a challenge for any teacher, so how has Cheryl managed to do this in the prison setting? Don’t miss this story of challenges and triumphs under extraordinary circumstances.

Assessment as a driver of activity for both students and teachers is well represented in the literature about box teaching and learning. A subset of assessment literature has also developed around the possibilities offered by emerging technologies to enhance assessment, for example, through offering more authentic tasks and more opportunities for formative feedback.

Not surprisingly, assessment has been a key focus of many Professional Development activities and funding initiatives, producing comprehensive guidelines and website support for assessment innovation.

Join this conversation to share your views and find out what literature is saying!
