Emerging workplace learning research suggests learners need to construct their own learning in order to become self actualised learners. It also addresses the dichotomy between workplace competence and workplace capability.
The challenge faced by language and literacy teachers in the workplace is to foster self actualised learning that is student directed, yet enables explicit teaching of language systems where context and content are often employer driven.
Visit the showcase to see concrete examples of our workplace provision.

Transforming Staff Induction Systems
SHOWCASE 16 | Andrew Pratt, Head Teacher, GEES, TAFE NSW New England Institute
TAFE NSW New England Institute has developed an integrated system to increase the accessibility and completion of induction programs for teaching staff. This showcase will demonstrate the overall system for managing staff inductions as well as the range of media used to support the program.
Traditionally, induction has been delivered using face-to-face classroom based models, offered once a year. Weaknesses have included low levels of completion by all staff, in particular part time casual teaching staff, and unsatisfactory completion in a timely manner.
This new induction program is offered using a range of delivery pathways, including CD-ROM, intranet, videoconference and face-to-face sessions. Each staff member can choose their preferred option for completing the program. The system includes follow-up strategies to ensure that induction is completed within specified timeframes as well as recording and reporting systems to meet legislative requirements.
