Indigenous Learning – Professional Development

Updated by Jill Gientzotis, for TAFE NSW ICVET | August 2006

The TAFE NSW Professional Development Framework 2004–2006 provides to TAFE Institutes, curriculum centres, and system wide units, a strategic framework for developing their own customised professional development plans, priorities, activities and programs for teachers.

In accordance with the goals of the Framework, ICVET aims to enable teachers in TAFE NSW to be responsive to the learning needs of Aboriginal people and their communities; competent in their teaching, facilitation and assessment; and capable of designing and developing customised products to meet the needs and requirements of Aboriginal people.

The Framework supports the development of people’s confidence in their ability to manage their own learning; to share ideas and learning with others; reflect on their own performance and outcomes; develop, deliver and evaluate products that meet a wide range of learning styles, using new technologies; and to engage effectively in solving operational problems.

The Framework aims to facilitate good practice and innovation in professional development for teaching, learning and assessment throughout TAFE NSW.

Below are some sites that refer you to professional associations and Aboriginal Education Consultative Groups. However, the whole of the ICVET website, and in particular those resources specifically identified to support pedagogy and learning when working with Aboriginal students and communities, and is designed to support your particular needs and own learning requirements. There are also some publications specifically relating to professional development.
